Learning to drive on today’s roads requires much more than just having the ability to use the controls.

A driver needs to be alert at all times and will need to show good control skillsexcellent observation, confidence and patience. The list is endless and there will be times when quick decisions will have to be made. Being courteous and having the right attitude to other road users are also very important factors and our instructor will explain how, when, where and why you should adopt this positive behaviour to help you pass your driving test and drive safely for life.

ALL POINTS Driver Training will teach you every skill required to be a safe driver for life and will make driving lessons fun with lots of laughs along the way.  Yes it is fun - no long faces during our lessons!!!

ALL POINTS Driver Training ensures that our driving instructor adheres to a strict code of conduct and our service is one of professionalism, courtesy, patience, safe driving and value for money.

To qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) all trainee or Potential Driving Instructors (PDI) must pass an examination with 3 separate parts.  The first, Part 1, is a normal driving test similar to that which a learner / novice driver will take however the Potential Driving Instructor must drive to an advanced standard and pass with 6 or less driving faults - learners can pass with 15 or less driving faults.

Once they have passed Part 1 they will take the Part 2 exam - Theory / Hazard Pereption Tests similar to that taken by a learner driver.  Again the pass standard for this exam is more difficult than that of a learner driver.  The third exam called the Part 3 is the Test of Ability to Instruct.  This test is the most difficult to pass for most would be driving instructors and generally over 95% of those taking the test fail.  Once someone passes all three exams they will need to maintain the high standards required by the Driver Vehicle Agency (DVA) by passing periodic check tests.

Fully qualified instructors are called Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's)

Trainee driving instructors are called Potential Driving Instructors (PDI's)

A PDI can apply for a licence to give driving tuition in exchange for payment once they have passed the Part 2 of the three qualifying exams. This licence is granted for one or possibly two six month periods and allows the individual to gain experience prior to taking the Part 3 exam.  It must be ponited out that some individuals are not interested in becoming Approved Driving Instructors and often people who cannot get jobs elsewhere use this method to get employment for short periods of time.  This obviously but importantly leaves a lot to be desired when chosing a driving instructor.

It is important to note that a PDI has not yet passed the third exam Part 3 which is a test of their instructional ability. The only exams they have passed are driving theory and an advanced driving test to prove they can drive and know the rules and regulations of the road.  It is important to note that not all Potential Driving Instructors will pass their Ability to Instruct exam and therefore they may well be sitting beside you giving you wrong information.

In a recent article published on the Driving Instructors Association (DIA) website, the difficulty in passing all three of the exams was highlighted. According to this article "fewer than five out of every hundred starters manage to make it to the end"...in other words less than five out of every hundred people who start training to become a driving instructor manage to qualify by passing the three exams needed to become an ADI (source: Driving Instructors Association "Money For Cold Hope") yet many of these people who never make it have been allowed to give driving tuition to members of the public by gaining a PDI licence.
Over 95% of PDI's fail to qualify as driving instructors...

The reason this is being highlighted to you is because many large national and local driving schools use a very high proportion of PDI's to teach their pupils but most of these have a tendency not to tell their pupils that their instructor is not a qualified ADI as currently the regulations state that they aren't required to.
